  1. What exactly does this mean?
Is it really small? I cannot find any info about this. Thanks.

  2. @6 H264 is the video format, and AAC is the audio format.

Most people think Xvid is a format, likewise they think AVI, MP4, MKV etc are formats. Xvid is just an encoder for the H263 standard. In fact, both Divx and Xvid encode to the same format, just unlike h264 they make out the formats are unique by different FourCC codes etc.

H264 is actually a superior format in terms of quality and filesize compared to H263 (xvid), but remember a lot of it comes down to the encoder used, the version of the encoder, and the settings the encoder choosed. H263 (xvid) is pretty maxed out quality wise, and it should be noted most scene encodes use quite old builds of xvid and lame so the quality doesn’t match what it could be (xvid has has some new features recently, including the port of VAQ from x264, the best H264 encoder).

If they used build 700 of x264 (current build is 1804), fast encode settings and 1-pass cbr, and disabled CABAC etc for speed, then its really an unfair comparison to using the highest settings in Xvid…

H264 is the standard used on Blu-rays, and also is used in some places for HDTV.

By far the best H264 encoder is x264, the worst mainstream one would be the one used for quicktime, its just plain terrible. The best AAC encoder would have to be NeroAACenc (its free too), the worst, well, itunes which uses AAC would be a good competitor in the worst category.

AAC was meant to be the replacement standard for MP3, it allows better quality audio at lower bitrate. Also at low bitrates, you don’t get those horrible mp3 artifacty sounds, you simply just don’t hear as many tones! It hasn’t really taken off though.

So, for this video, for the filesize it should be exceptionally good if done right – to the point where the bitrate is an overkill. They could have literally had it as a 120MB file that is still better quality than a 175mb xvid equivalent.

The .mp4 is the container format (the thing that ties the audio, video, and subtitles together. It is more advanced and efficient than the ancient avi container, but isn’t as advanced or efficient at the mkv container.

I’m sure people will argue that H263 (xvid, divx etc) is better than h264, or that h264 isn’t actually superior, but the fact is, they can argue all they want, it won’t change the fact that they are WRONG! ;)

great inf Mick! The problem with H264 is that the stand alone media players don`t support it, same with acac and cheaper Mp3 players… Any thoughts on the rise of mkv?

  4. Wow, That good info. Should actually be posted on this website for reference. Noobs should take note when converting their stuff.
