Do People Still use and worse still pay for WinrarWinzip ???
I would have thought most people would use the better free Archive utilities, like 7-Zip which has a better genral compression ratio and cleaner interface, with the same functionality if not more with the Plugins

WhooOOooT: We know there are freeware alternatives, but when it comes to the speed of extracting rar files, Winrar can do it at double the speed compared to the freeware versions. And since the extension I deal with is .rar 90% of the time, winrar it is.
@ Free vs winrar
that is main extensions I deal with are is mainly Rar @ home for downloadingdue to the x264 1080p movies which don’t extract any quicker than with winrar ,,,,,
and @ Work rarziprpmgzip as there are more extensions support with 7-zip (like rpm & msi, which are quite handy which are unsupported by winrar) not really sure about the point your trying to make about extensions ?
not sure about double the speed, as from my experience and test you only talking a couple of seconds to extract, where as the might be slightly longer to compress but there is a better compression ratio (which you can obviously change)
The are plenty of winrar Vs 7-zip articles on web, but there are pretty inconclusive
I’m pretty sure 7zip/peazip took longer on a set of rars I tested on. In Winrar it took around 30 seconds to extract, but in 7zip or peazip, it was around 50 seconds, seemed like a big difference to me. I didn’t do a lot of testing but thought it was good enough.
btw when I meant “extension” I meant the compression format being used :)
