Real D 3D movies work by projecting two copies of the movie onto the screen, one after the other in quick succession. One series of frames is from the perspective of the left eye, while the other is from the perspective of the right eye. The left and right projections have different light polarizations. The left lens of the 3D glasses allows the light from the left projection to be seen by the left eye, but prevents light from the right projection being seen by the left eye. The right lens does the opposite, allowing only the right projection’s light to be seen by the right eye. This has the effect of making the right and left eyes see slightly different versions of the movie, each from a different perspective, just as occurs when viewing a real-world scene. The human brain naturally combines the two two-dimensional images into a single, 3-dimensional scene.

This doesn’t work at home on a television or monitor because the monitor is not projecting two different images and even if it were, it can’t polarize the light from each image so that it’s filtered by the lenses.

@20 Not wanting to start a war, but I fail to see why they wont be able to reproduce the 3D version on DVD/Bluray for our plasmas etc. It was only ‘projected’ at the cinemas, sure possibly with a special projector, but there’s nothing trick about the screen it was projected onto. I’m pretty confident once the Bluray is released, we’ll be sitting at home watching this in 3D…

They are making a 3d blu-ray and tv combination but it’s not to hit production till much later. They say you can see 3D with plasma and LCD that have at least 120hz better with 240hz. Also there is to be a increase in the data rate so a new cable for HDMI was speculated but maybe they can just take the 60fps and make it 30fps with each frame alternating. Well thats what cameron wants to see happen so everyone can see real 3D at home.

I am sure you will need red cyan glasses as this recording was rendered in red cyan. Who owns those two color 3d glasses I dont know.

Shutter glasses will work on 3D TV. REALD glasses given in theatre will not work.

Then only way this works in 3D is if you drop a tab of acid. Even then, things are still blurry.

For the planned 3D Bluray and DVD, you’ll need one of those new 3D TVs which are not even on the market till later this year.

TV Sets cannot produce the polarized images which you can get from film projectors.

Looking at the sample, you see very little difference in the color offset, particular on the incoming arrow – someone is playing games with us.

Some people are wrong here. You can have rendered “3D” on a TV with red blue glasses and a red blue rendered film, potentially this rip I have not seen it yet.

If he did render it in red blue, and you have red blue glasses, it will seem like it is 3d. Its certainly not the polarized rendered REALD filtered imaging that you see in theatre but it will look sort of 3d. Like a step down, comparing normal TV to LED.

Won’t work buddy. This is not REALD 3D its, red-blue/magenta-green

If you have a red-blue/magenta-green pair of glasses like ones at superbowl or caroline than your money. Spoke a blunt and enjoy. But reald glasses given at cinema will not work. They use a different method of rendering 3d which utilizes two images not two colors like red-blue.

The new Real D 3d uses separate polarized images played back to back one over the other with 120hz. 60 for one eye and 60 for the other allowing you not to have to use the old style RED/BLUE glasses. Currently Sony is working with Real D on creating a Plasma screen that will be available at the end of this year that is capable of the Real D polarized. Some 120hz monitors currently on the market are able to view Real D 3d however the software to make it work is usually home brew and not really available. So there is in fact no way this is Real D 3d, If the images are blue and red then its anaglyp and can be viewed with the traditional glasses.

3d tv only means that the tv can work with 120hz

the technology is 10 years old and it worked on old crt’s but stopped working on lcds and plasmas.

today they produce 120hz lcds and plasmas so it can work on a new tv that can work in 120hz.
and every nvidia card from the last 2 years can make it work with a product called 3D Vision.
and you can play 3d games with the very same technology

Anyone who believes this is ANYTHING BUT a badly filtered re-encode from the original 2d source that’s been around for weeks, is suffereing from the classic ID10T error! The very same glitches, artifacts & errors from the initial shite ripping job give it away immediately.

Listen to the folks who’ve posted info on 3d technology, and failing that google it for yourselves, you might just learn a little! ;)

Personally, based on comments I’ve heard from Cameron & Fox execs in various interviews, I can’t see Avatar being released in anaglyph format…more likely gonna be aimed at the BluRay 3D/ShutterGlass market first (sometime after November) I suspect. ;)

Its is 3d…The effect is there when ya use the classic red and blue glasses. Only good depth effect when window is minimized. forget details though. The luminescent scenes look dull. If this is just a hobbyist 3d encoding another rip then…..not too shabby since the 3d does shine in select parts.

Sony and Panasonic are releasing 3D panels this year using active shutter glasses. You will also need a 3D blu-ray player to play the content. None of which are currently on the market let alone the actual blu-ray movies so it will be awhile yet before we see true 3D Rips. Can’t wait tho

man you dont need 3d tv to see that..
3d tv only means that the tv can work with 120hz

the technology is 10 years old and it worked on old crt’s but stopped working on lcds and plasmas.

today they produce 120hz lcds and plasmas so it can work on a new tv that can work in 120hz.
and every nvidia card from the last 2 years can make it work with a product called 3D Vision.
and you can play 3d games with the very same technology

3D (RED/CYAN aka Anaglyph 3D (like this bad encode) ) never stopped working on LCD’s and Plasmas ever so go to school, new HDTV’s that run at 120hz and 240hz were available before the new 3D craze , regular TV’s and HDTV’s run at 60hz ,the only difference is faster refresh rate on the image , there’s 2 new 3D methods , theres the Polarized 3D glasses that is used at the cinema and then there’s the 3D that its used on HDTV’s that uses Polarized 3D shutter glasses , the shutter glasses need batteries and syncs with the HDTV to do the proper open and close of the lens on your glasses via bluethoot or infrared signal.

The Digital 3D used today is far more advanced than the old Anaglyph 3D, for once you see colors instead of RED and Blue!! and you see them clear as day! and you dont get dizy after a short period of time at least i dont.

@93, Sav – #64 is talking about polarizing tech mate, not anaglyph. If you actually read the post correctly & knew your 3d history (or took the time to google it) you’d realize polarized lenses DID IN FACT WORK ON CRT TVs, but not on the current gen of LCD/Plasma!

I think this is a 2D to 3D conversion (as opposed to an official anaglyph 3D release such as Final Dest 3, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Caroline, etc) This was probably converted from a 2D source. I’m guessing this because of the red and blue bars on either side of the screen (which is usually a result of the 2D to 3D conversion process). Also, the FBI Warning is in 3D as well, which is unusual for an actual DVD produced by the studio in Anaglyph 3D, but is typical of 2D to 3D conversions. Having said that, I have over 80 true anaglyph movies from a tracker with a 3D project, and about a dozen 2D to 3D conversions. As most of you know, anaglyph produces more of a layering
effect as opposed to reach out and touch your nose digital 3D. Usually this effect is barely evident in 2D conversions, but it works pretty well in some scenes in this release. If this has been converted from 2D, it’s one of the best conversions I have ever seen.
And for all you people who continue to “hope my glasses from the theatre work for this”, as has been stated over and over again, this is Anaglyph 3D, not digital theatre 3D. It uses red-blue glasses. Clear, shaded, or polarized 3D glasses WILL NOT work on Anaglyph movies.

Anyway, give it a try and see what you think. It’s from a great source, IMO when viewed with red-blue glasses, it is actually clearer than the SecretMyth, Jay78, and FLAWL3SS releases.

Less blurry when there is a lot of movement compared to the source used for the previous screeners.

Also, if anyone has read that FOX has already stated NO 3D DVD release for this movie or Blu either, Google it…this is not 3D.

The weight of anecdotal evidence on this rls confirms that the 3d effects are neglible at best, regardless of the protestations of the cognitively distorted like you!

Only a halfwit would suggest a half-assed attempt at anaglyph 3d conversion from the same 2d source could be better visually than any of the above! It’s clear the seizures you’ve endured from watching this epileptic shite have lesioned most of your cerebral cortex! Tool! ;)

Contrary to what the layman might believe, there is actually a valid technical reason for this phenomenon; although despite your professed seemingly eminent qualifications; I’m not particularly surprised you don’t seem to know it! :)

ok guys. This is 3D but it doesn’t used polarized pics, it used anaglyph color magenta and cyan. What do you need is magenta & cyan glasses (red & blue) not the one used in cinema which is polarized glasses.

The problem with this release is the size of the vid is small. So, to enjoy this 3D effect you cannot view your video in full screen size. Because when it is in full screen, the pixel will blur + the anglyph color will not in a good accuracy. The 3D effect will only work in its real size which is obviously small.

So wait for the bigger release 720p

is that it is BULLSHIT! No amount of resizing will make it 3d; that bush logic would mean proper anaglyphs encoded at the same or lower resolution wouldn’t work fine at fullscreen, which they DO; that’s just plain idiotic!

There will NEVER be an anaglyph release of Avatar, JAMES CAMERON & FOX STUDIOS HAVE SAID SO PUBLICLY! Now, unless Jesus Christ himself calls up & says he’s bringing one back on his 2nd coming, I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for 720p anaglyph then, eh! ;)

I’m sorry Dssium, the position of Villiage Idiot has already been accepted by 3D! Your qualifications are impressive though! ;)

Ok, you got me! I’ll finally tell you guys the real secret of how to get this release to work properly, once you’ve put it on a BluRay disc that is:
First, get yourself a nice big new HD 3d TV (Sony will do nicely), then get a 3d projector like Dssium has (any brand), and a BluRay player outputting to both simultaneously, to play your newly mastered HD-DVD disc. You’ll also need some LCD shutterglasses (must be Nvidia) with page flipping enabled and with coloured cellophane taped over each lens; either blue, green or red, doesn’t matter as long as each eye and the projector lens are different. Now, project the coloured playing movie over the also playing image on the TV, making sure the images overlay precisely! Time to put on your now coloured Nvidia shutterglasses making sure the emitter is plugged in! Bit tedious I know, but bear with me, we’re almost there!

Ok, now here’s the REALLY important part, you won’t get 3d without it:
Get out your old Viewmaster from when you were a kid, put in one of the discs (any one will do, preferably something from Disney), sit directly in front of the TV, hold it up in front of your shutterglassed eyes looking through it toward the movie and, et voila….beautiful isn’t it! Each time you flip the Viewmaster you’ll move to another chapter of the movie! :D

The only downside is you’ll need a Viewmaster for everyone who wants to watch the movie with you; and you’ll all need to sit on each others laps so you’re in front of the TV; but if you can live with that one small caveat you can enjoy this release in all its glory! Worth it eh! ;)
