Serious who’s going to DL 30GB image files? If Sony want they can max out the cap and it’d be 50GB ISO files, renting and running from HDD i can see happening but not really rips and downloads

Just upgrade the current drive to a 1tb, you could rip plenty of games to it and you’d stil have to buy/rent them… it could work out nice for everyone, ‘cept the second hand stores buying everyones discs.

Funny this is posted here. Yeah, the kid George did it, although he’s not publicly posting the vulnerability just yet. It’s funny though, the system has been out how long, and then a 20 year old kid hacks it in just a few weeks? I think that’s kinda whack, why didn’t others put any effort into it sooner?
BTW, in regards to backups, who gives an F’, if you’ve gotta download 50-100 gigabytes. It’s called get a faster connection, and a bigger harddrive… geesh.

It actually depends on the game. If you look at http://orlydb.com/s/ps3 it will show some ps3 releases along with their size. But yes, maybe in the future as games progress PS3 games will become capped at 50GB and so will ISO’s but hopefully our internet connections will progress aswell :)

If it is true and the PS3 was indeed hacked. I might be possible to reverse it and create a custom firmware in order to play backed-up PS3 games much like you can already with the 360. In other words, free games

Hello hypervisor, I’m geohot
I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1.
3 years, 2 months, 11 days…thats a pretty secure system
Took 5 weeks, 3 in Boston, 2 here, very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software.
Shout out to George Kharrat from iPhoneMod Brasil for giving me this PS3 a year and a half ago to hack. Sorry it took me so long :)
As far as the exploit goes, I’m not revealing it yet. The theory isn’t really patchable, but they can make implementations much harder. Also, for obvious reasons I can’t post dumps. I’m hoping to find the decryption keys and post them, but they may be embedded in hardware. Hopefully keys are setup like the iPhone’s KBAG.

Honestly it has not been hacked to the point of playing games yet, Geohot has to go through tons of software and reverse everything, all he has done was get to read and write memory, and has dumped the gaming software…He also will not state how he has done it or how long it will take until one can play the games…He did state how he took control of the PS3 can not be patched, waiting to see if he can really do it…
But the down size is who the heck is going to dl them big azz games? 30 gigs – 50 gigs you need Verizon Fios or Comcast anything else you wouldn’t be able to do it…
And there is no games out yet, so don’t waste your time trying to find one and if you do it’s fake… Wait until Geohot says he has full done it…

Could be bad news for Sony if it is really hacked. There losing money as it is on this system. Developers complained its harder to develop games and costs more. Some say they wont develop for the PS3. Valve I believe is one. So if it is hacked and as one poster said “Free Games”!!!..Why would developers develop games on system that has lower market share,costs more to develop and now the nail in the coffin.. Its hacked. And the games they develop will be pirated..it costs like 15 million to make a PS3 game..1-2 games that do bad sales can break a developer.

Guys onces the hack is released the PS3 images will have there movies ripped to smaller sizes, differnt lauguages stripped off, making them much smaller and easyer to download they will probably even fit on a DVD by the time all the cr a p is removed.
Think you might be right in some of what you say fusion as theres alot of dummy sectors in modern discs.
Slysoft will probably release something to strip the krap and cure all your headaches.
Well done to the kid though for his effort as always i appreciate his patience.
Let´s wait… he just sayed that he could write in the memory and have full access to the processor.
So now he must find a way to make everything work without the original firmware. That is the only way to get it to work with dummy disks or games directly from the hdd.
And find out the way to get the ps3 working without the original firmware is one thing… making the games work and use sony internet source… that´s another big problem.
He can find a way to play the disks but anything that is missing and the ps3 says bye bye to the internet use.
So there is still a long walk (if he can find the keys fast, maybe 3 months… if not, may be around the end of this year somebody can find a way to hack it) before anything is available.
Not to talk that he needs to reverse everything… and the game developers had sayed right from the start that the ps3 had many “snag” to get them to use the console capacity. Not to talk that there where too much problems to solve when building a game for it. Now with the possible hack it will be the same thing.
