I think the whole argument can be made null, if we explain our american poster friend, that infact, the USA are just a part of a big world...and not the world it self.
Do keep that in mind for future reference.

Oh and take a look at Sports videogames.
How many soccer videogames are sold each year (PES,FIFA) and how many of other sports

the reason football(soccer) will always be a beautiful game is because it requires class/skill/creativity to play. NFL is the same thing over and over again, there is one guy who kicks the ball and the other who places it for him over and over, then there are those 200+ pound linebackers whose entire job revolves around clattering into people. flying backs who just run once in a while in a straight line with slight change of lanes.THAT IS IT! Its a sport for retards, the only person who needs a brain/creativity is the quarterback i'll admit that. In real football every week you see people come up with new tricks/new tactics and new ways to score a goal or make the game different! Just when you think you have seen it all after 100+ years of football someone will come up with something even better next week! that doesn't happen in NFL/Gridiron! Get over your yankee pride and get real! The world supports this game for a reason! And alot of these countries have much more culture then you can ever dream of!

@ Anonymous/Mike whoever you are, time to look at the FACTS:

What are the most popular sports worldwide?

Football (Soccer) ranks at the top of a majority of the credible lists published.

"Most popular" could mean "most watched", "most played" or "most revenue-generating."

Based on the variable definition of "most popular" the following observations apply:

* The most played sport in the world is FOOTBALL (your soccer).

* Based on the number and size of stadiums around the world, the number of people who wear football merchandise, number of people who are aware of football, and the number of leagues/tournaments worldwide (The WORLD CUP, UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, THE SOUTH AMERICAN CUP, THE AMERICAN CUP, THE ASIAN CUP, 70 English league teams, 40 Italian league teams, 40 Spanish league teams and all other European countries with their own leagues) football ranks at the top of the list regardless the definition of "most popular".

Most Frequently Cited Ranked Lists

1) Football. 3.3-3.5 Billion Fans. (Europe, Africa, Asia, Americas, etc)
2) Cricket 2-3. Billion Fans. (India,U.K,Pakistan,Asia,Australia,etc)
3) Field Hockey. 2-2.2 Bilion Fans. (Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia)
4) Tennis. Around 1 Billion Fans. (Europe, Americas, Asia)
5) Volleyball Around 900 Million Fans. (Asia, Erope, Americas, Australia)
6) Table Tennis Around 900 Million Fans. (Asia, Europe, Africa, Americas)
7) Baseball Around 500 Million Fans. (U.S, Japan, Cuba, Dom rep)
8) Golf Around 400 Million Fans. (U.S, Canada, Europe)
9) Gridiron (american football) 390-410 Million Fans. (U.S mainly)
10) Basketball Not more than 400M Fans. (U.S, Canada mainly)

Your blessed American Football barely scrapes into the top 10.

Bad news for you Xenophobes! (Look it up)

I rest my case.

FYI. The SuperBowl is the single most watched EVENT, every year, in the world! Sports & Non-Sports!!

Olympics do not count. That is a gathered event of tons of various sports, and viewership over a 2 week period. You would have to take a single event, ie. 100 metre dash, and compare those numbers.

It just does not compare!

Quote
"The only reason it is the most popular, is because of people in countries, that have no other options for sports. And all you need is a ball to play. No equiptment needed."

This would mean that Paintball is superior to Karate because you nead more equipment :)

I find it funny how it is the so-called "Most popular Sport in the world"

YET......

TONS of other sports, TV ratings DEMOLISH soccer ratings!!! Thats the REAL measure of how popular a sport really is. The only reason it is the most popular, is because of people in countries, that have no other options for sports. And all you need is a ball to play. No equiptment needed.

Sports that have higher TV ratings than Soccer:
Baseball
NFL Football
Basketball
COLLEGE NCAA Basketball
COLLEGE NCAA Football
Hockey
Mens Golf
Tennis
F1 Racing
Nascar
UFC/MMA
WWE Wrestling (not a sport, but has higher ratings)

Note: More people watch the SuperBowl, than ANY other EVENT (not just sports) in the WORLD!!!

Mike said:
"Beacuse all you need is a ball to play, thats it! Nothing else! So you have billions of people in 3rd world countries, and all they can afford is a ball. This is why, and the ONLY reason why.. it is the most played sport in the world. Not because of the drama, skill, passion etc, as you say. Its because lower class people, do not know any better!"

Who the hell do you think you are to speak like that?!
Third world countries? All WE can afford? Lower class PEOPLE?

Are you better then us because of money? I hope you die.

Couple of differences:
Players don't use their HANDS when playing FOOTball.
Fans don't eat a complete junk meal while watching a game at the stadium.

@Mike

You obviously haven't watched many Football matches that's for sure.

Forget what your parents told you, watch this release and educate yourself.

Football is not a class related sport, it's open to everyone and that's exactly WHY it's SO popular. The 'lower class' people you refer to are often victims of severe political conditions bought on by the very people who hoodwink you into believing that you are better than them. Ignorance is bliss, how true.

On a final note, you don't get to be a professional footballer (soccer) player just because you weigh 200lbs and because your parents can afford to put you through university. It takes skill, commitment, passion and love. And those ingredients make the beautiful game the most popular game on the planet in all history. FACT.

@Mike

You could still play American Football just with a ball if you really wanted to. They play rugby league/union which is just as brutal without any padding helmets.

The reason why it is played professionally all over the world is because it is a superior game. Always has been, always will be. That's why you even viewed this release.

I've place bets on the NFL and I couldn't even sit through the game, same as baseball. Basketball is the only decent game that you yanks follow.

You said that it "american football" is pointless, and only played in the US.

Do your research. it is played in MANY countries, other than the USA. Did you know that there is even an NFL EUROPE? Again, do your research.

And want to know why Soccer is the most played sport in the world?

Beacuse all you need is a ball to play, thats it! Nothing else! So you have billions of people in 3rd world countries, and all they can afford is a ball. This is why, and the ONLY reason why.. it is the most played sport in the world. Not because of the drama, skill, passion etc, as you say. Its because lower class people, do not know any better!

My family is from Europe, and grew up with soccer. Once they came to North America, they realized that there are tons of other, more interesting, and competive sports to enjoy, and soccer went into history, in their minds. Soccer will have, on average, 2-3 big moments in 90 minutes of play, where the crowd is on the edge. I can name 20 other sports, that can beat that with 10+ big moments within a game, to be on the edge of your seat.

Personally, I rather watch paint dry.

"a game of drama, skill, flair and passion"

You must be joking? God forbid, someone goes for a tackle, or the wind changes direction... Ronaldo, will go down, crying like a 3 year old just stole his candy, and if he does not get a foul call, he is back up like nothing happend.

Every soccer player is a little baby b*tch!!! Yea, thats right... I said it... Prove me wrong!?!???

Grow some balls, and play or watch a REAL SPORT!!! ie.. Hockey!

Heck, even ladies golf, has more balls than soccer players.

James Earl Ray - Actually it's the ONLY real football there is, a game of drama, skill, flair and passion. What's the point of running around a field wearing crash helmet's and body armor and throwing an egg for someone to catch?

Pointless, and only played in the US. FOOTBALL however is a worldwide game, enjoyed on every continent. You only hate it because your country are pants at it.
